First World War

Axtell, Guy Allen

Died in 1916 aged 18.  Private in Queen's Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment.

He was born in Blindley Heath, and lived at The Limes, Blindley Heath.

He is also recorded on the Thieval Memorial in France.

Brooker, Christopher Roland

Died in 1916. 

He lived at 2 South End Villas, Blindley Heath.  He is buried at Blindley Heath.  The family opted not to have a grave stone from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, but the stone they erected has suffered a lot from frost damage in recent years.

Burchett, Thomas Edwin

Died in 1918 aged 24.  Sergeant in Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment.

Died in 1918 aged 35.  Private in the Machine Gun Corps. 

He lived at Lyndon on the Eastbourne Road in Blindley Heath.

Died in 1919 aged 24.  Lance Corporal in the Royal Defence Corps.

Son of John and Emily Humphrey, of Blindley Heath.  Buried here in St John's churchyard.

Mansel Howe, Charles Jorworth

Died in 1918. 

He lived at Londesborough House on the Tilburstow Hill Road.  He is buried at Haucourt in France.

Lingley, Sidney

Manuel, Eustratius

Died in 1918.  He was a Lieutenant in the newly formed Royal Air Force.

He was born in London to parents who had come to this country as refugees from Constantinople.  He lived at The Homestead, South Park.  He is buried at West Norwood.

Died in 1918. 

He lived at Prinkham Farm near Edenbridge. He is buried at Karasouli in Greece.

Oliver, George

Died in 1920 aged 35.  Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

Son of Thomas and Eliza Oliver, of "Crowhurst," Lingfield; husband of Alice Mary Oliver, of Alma Cottage, Blindley Heath.  He is buried at Blindley Heath.

Quickenden, Henry

Died in 1917 aged 23.  Private in the Middlesex Regiment.

Son of Clement and Susanna, who lived at West Cottage, Blindley Heath.  He is also recorded on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton, which records those whose graves are not known, many of whom were lost in transports or other vessels torpedoed or mined in home waters.

Sanderson, Thomas Edward

Died in 1918.  Lieutenant in the York and Lancaster Regiment.

He lived at Hunters Hill, Blindley Heath.  He is buried at West-Vlaanderen in Belgium.

Skinner, Arthur

Died in 1917 aged 33.  Private in the Middlesex Regiment.

He was the husband of Daisy Kate Skinner, of 4 The Villas, Blindley Heath, Surrey.  He is buried at St Hilaire Cemetery, Frevent, France.

Wooldridge, William

Died in 1919 aged 51.  Private in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.

He is buried at Blindley Heath.

Died in 1942.  He lived at White Lodge Cottage, Eastbourne Road, Blindley Heath.  He is buried at Noyers-le-Val in France.

Died in 1941.  He lived at Holmlea on Byers Lane.  He is buried at Ismailia in Egypt.

Died in 1943.  Flying Officer in Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve

He lived at Little Hobbs Cottage on Tandridge Lane.  He is buried at Stafford.

Carruthers, Robert Morris Liddell

Died in 1943.  The Commonwealth War Graves Commission record that he was from Blindley Heath, but do not record an address.  He is buried at Dely Ibrahim in Algeria.

Died in 1944 aged 21.  Private in The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey)

He lived at Ruxley Cottage on Byers Lane.  His death is also recorded on the Cassino Memorial in Italy.

Died in 1945.  He lived at Tanglehedge in Felbridge, and his parents lived at Carlton Cottage on Carlton Road.  He is buried at Golders Green.

Died in 1941 aged 21.  Second Lieutenant in the Royal Tank Regiment.

He lived at Gate House Farm on the Eastbourne Road (now close to the British Wildlife Centre).  He is buried at Acroma, Libya.

Died in 1943.  He lived at Hookstyle House on Byers Lane.  He is buried at Catania in Sicily

Died in 1941.  He lived at 1 Gays Cottages on Byers Lane.  He is buried in the churchyard at Blindley Heath.
